A man shows the scene at an Advanced gas station when three different cars fail to start after filling up on gas. The truck that filled the gas tanks is still on the scene.
TikTok account Entertanement4 (@entertanement4) is a page that reposts viral videos from across the internet. In a video posted on Friday, the account shows the scene outside of an Advanced gas station, as an on-screen caption reads, “Cars won’t start after fillup.”
The person filming the scene offers an explanation for what’s happening. “Three different cars at this Advanced Auto won’t start,” he says. “This Nissan Maxima just put gas in his car. His car won’t start. This Mercedes-Benz over here just put gas in his car. His car won’t start. This is the truck; they put the gas in.”
The on-screen text continues the story: “Apparently, the gas station’s tank was full of water. The nonchalant owner will only pay for the gas they put in their cars. And not for the potential repairs, which will be at the owners’ expense.”
In the comments section, viewers weighed in on the situation and speculated as to which party would ultimately be responsible for the damages.
“They watered the gas down,” wrote one person. “It ruined the cars.”
A second person surmised, “Easy civil suit. The store owner’s general liability insurance will cover that.”
“Kids, that’s why I don’t stop at a gas station when they are filling up the tanks,” wrote another person.
Other viewers couldn’t resist poking fun at the cars shown in the video. “When was this filmed?” asked one person. “In 1998, by the look of all those cars.”
A second person joked, “Looks like the ‘Matilda’ dad car lot.”
A third person said, “The owner got lucky. He can pay off all the old cars with register money.”
Simply put, water in your gas tank is bad news. And that’s because a vehicle’s engine runs on gasoline and air. Water completely disrupts that process and can damage the entire fuel system, resulting in engine misfire and reduced fuel efficiency. In a worst-case scenario, it can lead to complete engine failure. That appears to be what happened to the vehicles in the TikTok.
It might sound bizarre, but water finding its way into gas station pumps through leaks or human error isn’t unprecedented. It happened to a woman in Macon, Georgia, earlier this year. It cost her thousands of dollars in repairs to her Cadillac. That same month, drivers in Oklahoma encountered the same problem, and the gas station in question blamed the problem on construction issues.
So, what do you do if this happens to you? Get your car to a mechanic right away. The Georgia woman expressed relief that a warning light lit up on her Cadillac directly after she filled up her tank, which alerted her to the problem and made her rush to the mechanic. The mechanic can drain your gas tank and address any damage to your fuel system.
In terms of liability, the drivers in question may have a case, but they have to consult with an attorney to determine the best way forward.
