Some people top the gas tank off beyond the point at which it automatically clicks off. <\/p>\n Seems harmless, right?<\/p>\n Well, fuel station guidelines and environmental safety experts do discourage it. Readers Digest<\/em> also published research<\/a> highlighting the dangers of \u201ctopping off\u201d at the pump\u2013clicking past the point where the censor cuts off the flow of gas\u2013calling the move a \u201cdangerous gas-pumping mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n They noted that it can \u201ccontaminate the carbon filter with gasoline\u2014potentially damaging your car\u2019s engine.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTopping off also runs the risk of fuel spillage, which can harm the environment and potentially spark a fire at the pump. In addition, most gas stations have vapor recovery systems, too.
